Brazil’s Supreme Court Orders X to Pay $5.2 Million Fine for Compliance Issues
The Brazilian Supreme Court has ordered social media platform X, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, to pay a total of approximately $5.2 million in fines before it can resume operations in the country. This ruling follows the platform’s previous efforts to comply with court directives, including appointing a local legal representative and removing inappropriate content.
On Friday, Judge Alexandre de Moraes ruled that X must pay an existing fine of 18.3 million reais, along with an additional penalty of 10 million reais for permitting some Brazilian users to access the platform during a mandated ban. The combined fines underscore the legal challenges facing the platform in Brazil as it navigates regulatory requirements.
