Coin Center Announces Key Changes in Executive Leadership
Blockworks reports that Coin Center, a prominent crypto think tank, is making notable shifts in its top management. Executive Director Jerry Brito and Senior Policy Counsel Robin Weisman are set to leave their positions at the end of this year. Both have been instrumental in Coin Center’s journey since its founding in 2014 and will remain involved as members of the board of directors. Peter Van Valkenburgh, who currently serves as the Director of Research, will take over as Executive Director starting January 1, while Landon Zinda, the current Policy Counsel, will step into the role of Policy Director.
Brito shared his pride in the organization’s achievements over the past decade, recalling the uncertainty surrounding the future of Bitcoin when Coin Center was established. He highlighted the technical resilience of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies while acknowledging the significant short-term challenges and risks that needed to be addressed.
These leadership changes come on the heels of Coin Center’s recent success in appealing to reopen its 2022 lawsuit against the Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service. This lawsuit contests a modification to the US tax code that classifies digital assets as cash, mandating that transactions over $10,000 be reported. Although initially dismissed, the appeals court ruled in August that some of Coin Center’s claims have legal grounds.
In addition to this lawsuit, Coin Center has been involved in other legal actions, including submitting amicus briefs in support of Tornado Cash and its founder in a case against the US government. This follows Coin Center’s own legal action against the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control after the US imposed sanctions on Tornado Cash. In 2023, the court ruled in favor of the government, allowing the addition of Tornado Cash to its sanctioned entities list.
Weisman took to X to express her gratitude for the opportunity to help shape Coin Center, reflecting on her experience with the organization.
