Ethereum Developers Review Pectra Upgrade and Upcoming Hard Forks

In the latest Ethereum Core Developers Execution (ACDE) call, summarized by Galaxy Research Vice President Christine Kim, developers discussed the upcoming Pectra upgrade and its implications for the Ethereum execution layer (EL). During ACDE #197, the team agreed to move forward with the Pectra upgrade on a limited scale, currently incorporating eight Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) in Devnet 3. They also considered including four EIPs related to the Ethereum blob fee market as part of this upgrade.

While Vitalik Buterin advocated for increasing blob capacity in Pectra, some developers voiced concerns, leading to no final decision on this matter. Relevant blob-related EIPs under discussion include EIP 7762 (which proposes raising the MIN_BASE_FEE_PER_BLOB_GAS), EIP 7623 (which aims to increase calldata costs), and EIP 7742 (which seeks to separate blob counts between the Consensus Layer and Execution Layer).

Looking ahead, developer Tim Beiko confirmed that the next Ethereum hard fork following Pectra will be named Fusaka, which will include the PeerDAS and EOF proposals. Additional EIPs may be added to Fusaka as progress continues on these two initiatives. Beiko also introduced a new EIP for Execution Layer upgrades called ‘Amsterdam,’ which aims to advance the Verkle EIP that was initially considered for inclusion in the Osaka upgrade.
